L'Eixample, is a very high and safe area of
Barcelona designed to deal with the swelling population of the 19th
century. Consisting of wide streets with distinctive plazas with cut off
corners . Lying above Plaça Catalunya and The Ramblas (10 minutes
walking), it quickly found favour with the middle classes and soon the
modernista architects were being commissioned by some of the more
status conscious inhabitants - Passeig de Gràcia includes two of
the finest examples of Gaudí's work, Casa Batllo and La Pedrera.
Today the Eixample is the main shopping and business district of
Barcelona, plenty of restaurants and bars as well.
